Prof. Mario Paolone

Professor of Distributed Electrical Systems
Mario Paolone received the M.Sc. (with honors) and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from the University of Bologna, Italy, in 1998 and 2002, respectively. In 2005, he became an Assistant Professor in power systems at the University of Bologna, where he worked in the Power Systems Laboratory until 2011. Since 2011, he has been with the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Lausanne, Switzerland, where he is a Full Professor and the Chair of the Distributed Electrical Systems Laboratory. His research focuses on power systems, with particular emphasis on real-time monitoring, operational aspects, protection, dynamics, and transients. Dr. Paolone has made significant contributions in the field of PMU-based situational awareness for Active Distribution Networks (ADNs) and in developing exact, convex, and computationally efficient methods for the optimal planning and operation of ADNs. Dr. Paolone was the founding Editor-in-Chief of the Elsevier journal Sustainable Energy, Grids and Networks. In 2022, he has been nominated Fellow of the IEEE.
