EcoCloud: an Introduction

EcoCloud is a center at EPFL, the Swiss Federal Polytechnic Institute in Lausanne, gathering researchers, students and industrial affiliates to tackle issues related to sustainable computing.

The mission of EcoCloud is to foster excellent research in computing, from cloud to edge, with an accent on low-energy computation achieved through dedicated hardware and software system design.  EcoCloud researchers are competent in several areas of design, realization, testing and operation of computing systems.  EcoCloud runs an experimental data center facility, that enables the exploration of sustainable computing flows as well as innovative hardware platforms.

The multidisciplinary of high-performance, low-energy computing requires the joint effort of various researchers, studying different facets of the problem. EcoCloud actively involves industrial affiliates, as a central facility to exchange expertise and promote innovation. Thus, EcoCloud promotes both connections among brilliant graduate students and industrial partners, as well as technology transfer from the university to the industrial domains.

EcoCloud works as a focal point for running collaborative research grants, enabling the affiliated research laboratories at EPFL to receive financial support as well as advising from the community. EcoCloud promotes Open Science and scientific information sharing, and promotes education on the future evolution of computing.

Overall, EcoCloud is unique as a center for addressing challenging scientific goals along with ethical objective to realize eco-responsible computing.
