DESCRIPTION:The technological advances in miniaturized\, ultra-low power embedded systems\, in communication protocols and in AI techniques\, are leading to disruptive innovations. How to embrace the opportunities and challenges offered by smart machine learning devices and IoT connected technologies? \nConnecting Artificial Intelligence (AI) to Internet of Things (IoT) will cover three main themes: \n\nSmart machine learning devices enabeling edge AI in cloud-based IoT (hardware and software designs\, AI technologies and power/energy requirements)\,\nCommunication for IoT (latest protocols and standards) and\nExamples of Industry 4.0\, smart homes and wearable IoT devices (including practical case studies of application-oriented IoT designs).\n\nThis course is designed for top and middle managers wanting to learn the fundamentals and understand the latest trends of IoT technologies and edge AI computing. SUMMARY:Oracle Labs Presentation & Tech Talk
DESCRIPTION:Research in Oracle Labs: AI\, LLM\, Vector Database\, Data Analytics and Business Applications\nThis talk focuses on Oracle Labs’ role in the rapidly changing world of AI and data analytics. We will showcase Oracle’s latest research and developments in these areas\, emphasizing how AI is transforming business practices. \nWe start with an overview of how database is evolving for AI workload. We introduce several vector database features announced in the recent Oracle Cloud World and discuss technical challenges for academia to solve. We show native support of graph data modelling in database and its large-scale\, elastic execution\, which enables to manage complex data relationships and extract insights from huge datasets. We’ll discuss the technical hurdles and recent advancements in scalable data processing. \nNext\, we discuss Oracle Lab’s work in applying AI to enterprise applications. This includes an overview of how Oracle Lab’s Recommendation System is improving user experience and business intelligence for enterprise applications. We also cover how Oracle’s AutoMLx toolset incorporates fairness metrics\, helping users to add considerations into their AI applications. We then show how modern AI is crucial for addressing issues in cybersecurity as well. \nLastly\, we explore other uses of Large Language Models (LLMs) in solving business problems\, with a focus on Code Generation and Data Integration. We’ll discuss the challenges of using LLMs for practical business applications\, particularly in code generation\, and highlight our approaches. In Data Integration\, we’ll examine how LLMs help in merging different unstructured data sources. \n  \nSungpack Hong is a Senior Research Director at Oracle Labs. He joined Oracle at 2012 after getting his PhD from Stanford University. He leads several research projects regarding graph data processing\, large scale data analytics\, domain-specific languages\, and machine learning.

SUMMARY:X-HEEP Workshop: Enabling rapid and sustainable RISC-V based research using open source HW and SW
DESCRIPTION:As our world becomes more interconnected and reliant on digital systems\, the need for transparency\, accessibility\, and collaborative innovation in hardware and software design has become paramount. Closed and proprietary solutions often limit user sovereignty and control\, hinder interoperability\, and stifle innovation by locking users into a specific ecosystem. In contrast\, open-source initiatives are leading towards rapid prototyping of novel ideas and systems and unlocking from any specific vendor by empowering academic and industrial users to control\, modify\, and build upon existing technology. This workshop will bring both academic and industry members into a discussion about open-source hardware (HW) and software (SW) interests and showcase the potential of open-source technology with the eXtendable Heterogeneous Energy-Efficient Platform\, X-HEEP. \nX-HEEP is an EU and RISC-V-based enabler platform for rapid and sustainable VLSI/ASIC system design\, automation\, and testing. Following the success stories of open-source projects in the SW ecosystem\, with Linux kernel as the best example\, X-HEEP aims to foster innovative\, easy-to-integrate\, easy-to-use ASIC-oriented technology. Similarly\, other open-source HW initiatives\, such as OpenHW Group\, OpenRoad\, and SkyWater are already revolutionising the semiconductor industry by democratising chip design via open-source IPs\, EDA tools\, and PDKs. To this end\, X-HEEP enables HW research and freely delivers industrial-grade\, silicon-proven open-source CPU IPs from OpenHW. Together with our academic and industrial partners\, we will showcase the usage of X-HEEP for \n\nSW engineers to deploy end-to-end applications\,\nHW engineers to integrate and evaluate their own IPs\, and\nsystem-level designers to architect a full system using its configurability and extendibility capabilities.\n\nOpen-source HW and SW are becoming essential in the rapidly evolving technological landscape. This workshop fosters a shared knowledge and creativity culture\, enabling a broader range of applications\, from affordable healthcare devices to sustainable energy solutions. It stands as a critical pillar for a more inclusive\, innovative\, and sustainable technological future. \nCall for Posters\nTo improve the discussion possibilities among junior and senior researchers\, in this workshop\, a Poster Competition is scheduled. We invite submissions on\, but not limited to\, the following topics: \n\nOpen-source SW applications (end-to-end) being deployed into open-source Systems (SoC\, NoC\, SiP\, etc)\nOpen-source HW Accelerators integrated into open-source Systems (SoC\, NoC\, SiP\, etc).\nOpen-source systems (SoC\, NoC\, SiP\, etc) offering extra versatility and configurability in comparison to COTS solutions.\n\nA submission can describe a novel scientific result\, provide a position statement about a new and relevant problem\, or report a case study on practical experiences with a topic from the list above. DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Amir M. Rahmani\, PhD\, MBA \nAffiliation: Professor of CS\, EECS\, and Nursing\, Co-Director of the UCI Institute for Future Health\, University of California\, Irvine\, USA \n“Future Health” emphasizes the importance of recognizing each individual’s uniqueness\, which arises from their specific omics\, lifestyle\, environmental\, and socioeconomic conditions. Thanks to advancements in sensors\, mobile computing\, ubiquitous computing\, and artificial intelligence (AI)\, we can now collect detailed information about individuals. This data serves as the foundation for creating personal models\, offering predictive and preventive advice tailored specifically to each person. These models enable us to provide precise recommendations that closely align with the individual’s predicted needs. \nIn my presentation\, I will explore how AI\, including generative AI\, and wearable technology are revolutionizing the collection and analysis of big health data in everyday environments. I will discuss the analytics used to evaluate physical and mental health and how smart recommendations can be made objectively. Moreover\, I will illustrate how leveraging Large Language Models (LLMs)-powered conversational health agents (CHAs) can integrate personal data\, models\, and knowledge into healthcare chatbots. \nAdditionally\, I will present our open-source initiative on developing OpenCHA. This integration allows for the creation of personalized chatbots\, enhancing the delivery of health guidance directly tailored to the individual. \n  \nBiography: \nAmir M. Rahmani is the founder of the Health SciTech Group at the University of California\, Irvine (UCI) and the co-founder and Co-Director of the Institute for Future Health\, a campus-wide Organized Research Unit at UCI. He is also a lifetime docent (Adjunct Professor) at the University of Turku (UTU)\, Finland. \nHis research includes AI in healthcare\, ubiquitous computing\, AI-powered bio-signal processing\, health informatics\, and big health data analytics. He has been leading several NSF\, NIH\, Academy of Finland\, and European Commission-funded projects on Smart Pain Assessment\, Community-Centered Care\, Family-centered Maternity Care\, Stress Management in Adolescents\, and Remote Elderly and Family Caregivers Monitoring. \nHe is the co-author of more than 350 peer-reviewed publications and the associate editor-in-chief of ACM Transactions on Computing for Healthcare and Frontiers in Wearable Electronics journals and the Editorial Board of Nature Scientific Reports. He is a distinguished member of the ACM and a senior member of the IEEE.

SUMMARY:Designing Computer Systems under Sanctions and Sustainability
DESCRIPTION:August Ning\, Doctoral Assistant \nPrinceton University \nHost: Babak Falsafi\, PARSA \nRecently events such as global chip shortages\, semiconductor subsidies\, and the rise of large scale machine learning have emphasized the importance of semiconductors in our everyday lives. Recent regulations by the United States of America placed export controls on flagship GPU devices used for AI applications. Governments and companies alike have policies toward reducing carbon emissions\, specifically related to information and communications technology. \nComputing sanctions and sustainability metrics fundamentally change how computer systems are designed and optimized. First\, we will overview computing sanctions and how they affect chip architectures. Existing sanction specifications seem counterintuitive to how architects traditionally approach chip design. We show how existing policies make chip manufacturing more expensive and how LLM inference performance can still be improved compared to restricted baselines. Then I will detail how architecture-first policies can reduce the economic externalities caused by existing regulations. \nThen we will focus on how computer system designers can reason about sustainability. We analyze fine-grained data center computing and energy data towards building a framework for evaluating sustainability and cost trade offs. To conclude\, we will motivate the important role of computer scientists for crafting fair\, effective\, and impactful computing policy.  \nBio: \nAugust Ning is a senior PhD candidate at Princeton University\, working with Prof. David Wentzlaff. His research interests span computer architecture under broadly defined economic constraints such as chip manufacturing\, policy\, and sustainability. He is supported by the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship and Princeton’s Gordon YS Wu Fellowship.

SUMMARY:High-Level Synthesis for Accelerator Design: Current Trends and Emerging Directions
DESCRIPTION:Hardware specialization is increasingly essential to meet the performance and energy demands of modern applications. High-level synthesis (HLS) has emerged as a key enabling technology\, allowing designers to rapidly generate specialized accelerators while exploring complex trade-offs between computation\, communication\, and memory. Significant challenges remain\, however\, including the need to orchestrate efficient data movement across memory hierarchies\, optimize communication architectures\, and protect both data and intellectual property in accelerator design. \nThis talk will discuss how compiler optimizations\, HLS\, and hardware design techniques can be combined to address these challenges. I will first discuss current trends\, including the growing integration of HLS into heterogeneous system design\, advances in communication and memory optimization\, and the increasing role of hardware-level security. I will then highlight emerging directions\, including the use of large language models to support hardware design automation and the integration of HLS into fully open-source EDA tool flows. \nProf. Christian Pilato\nChristian Pilato is an Associate Professor at Politecnico di Milano. DESCRIPTION:Dr. Javier Picorel of Huawei \nIn 2020 Dr. Picorel gave a talk at the EcoCloud Annual Event on Edge Computing at Huawei. Now he returns with a fascinating presentation about the battle of the interconnects. \nAs traditional scale-up interconnects like NVIDIA’s NVLink and CXL extend beyond single nodes to span racks and clusters\, and new scale-out networks such as UALink and Broadcom’s SUE emerge for low-latency scenarios\, a competitive shift is underway in computer system design. Meanwhile\, the slowdown of technology scaling is prompting exploration of extreme-scale integration\, with innovations like Cerebras’ Wafer-Scale Engine and Tesla’s Dojo poised to further disrupt interconnect architectures. In this evolving landscape\, the key question remains: which interconnect paradigm will define the future of computing? \nJavier Picorel leads the Future Computer Fabrics team at Huawei’s Zurich Research Center\, where he is driving the development of next-generation decomposable-native infrastructure. His team focuses on the tighter integration of applications\, parallel programming models\, networking\, and compute to enable highly modular and elastic computing architectures. Javier’s research spans a broad range of topics in computer architecture\, computer systems\, computer networks\, and hardware-software co-design. DESCRIPTION:An Industrial Perspective on Gaining a Competitive Edge Through Automation\nThe growing complexity of modern chips and the pressure to maintain a competitive edge in industry are pushing traditional electronic design automation (EDA) tools to their limits\, increasing the need for more customizable and scalable design methodologies. As the demand for more performant and specialized hardware keeps rising on the semiconductor market\, artiﬁcial intelligence (AI) is emerging as a transformative force in chip design. This talk explores how AI can optimize key processes in the design of analog circuits and digital systems\, offering a perspective from industry. \nTopics include: \n\ntrends in AI for analog design\, from simulator surrogates to generative AI for layout\nLLMs for RTL coding and AI for efﬁcient veriﬁcation of digital systems\nan industrial perspective on the in-house development of AI automation tools\n\nAndrea Bonetti received a Master’s degree in Electronic Engineering from Politecnico di Milano\, Italy\, in 2012. In 2011\, he visited the Bio Engineering Laboratory (BEL) at ETH Zurich\, Switzerland. From 2012 to 2014\, he worked as an Analog Design Engineer at AMS AG\, Switzerland\, focusing on the development of audio interfaces with MEMS sensors. He obtained a Ph.D. degree from EPFL\, Switzerland\, in 2019\, under the supervision of Prof. Andreas Burg on the energy/quality trade-offs in digital integrated circuits. In 2016\, he visited the Circuits Research Laboratory at Intel Labs\, USA. From 2019 to 2023\, he worked as a Senior R&D Engineer at CSEM\, Switzerland\, in the System-on-Chip group. Since 2023\, he has been a Staff Research Scientist at Sony AI\, Switzerland\, where he leads a team of researchers on AI for analog circuit design. \n

DESCRIPTION:In collaboration with the Applied Machine Learning Days\, we will explore holistic approaches to sustainable computing\, from renewable energy integration and advanced cooling in data centers to hardware efficiency with custom accelerators\, energy storage solutions\, heat reuse\, and the broader vision of sustainable AI. \nAs AI demand continues to rapidly increase\, its growing energy demand calls for urgent and holistic solutions to be sustainable. During this event\, the talks will address sustainable computing across multiple layers\, from renewable energy integration and advance cooling technologies in data centers to energy-efficient hardware design and custom accelerators. DESCRIPTION:Is AI part of the climate problem or the sustainability solution? In this hands-on workshop\, participants will explore its carbon footprint\, discover practical tools\, and co-design new pathways — including a visit to EPFL’s EcoCloud facility. \nArtificial Intelligence is becoming increasingly energy-intensive\, with datacenters projected to consume up to 10% of global electricity by 2030. Racks alone may soon reach 1MW per unit\, raising urgent questions about the sustainability of AI infrastructure. The shift from performance-driven to sustainability-driven datacenters presents multiple challenges — and opportunities. \nThis workshop explores these challenges and highlights pathways toward sustainable AI. We will focus particularly on the carbon footprint of datacenters\, while also examining how AI itself can serve as an enabler of sustainability. \nThe session will alternate between short expert inputs and dynamic small-group discussions on key questions. SUMMARY:Prof. Prashant Nair: Scaling the Memory Wall
DESCRIPTION:Towards 3D-DRAM-based Accelerators for Efficient Generative Inference\nGenerative AI now underpins search\, digital assistants\, and media applications\, making inference cost a first-order design constraint. Unlike traditional compute-bound workloads\, large language and speech models are typically limited by memory bandwidth and capacity rather than raw arithmetic throughput. Thus\, their inference cost is driven as much by data movement as by compute\, and therefore hinges on the memory system’s design. This concern is especially acute during autoregressive decoding\, which must repeatedly stream model weights and key–value (KV) caches at high bandwidths and low latencies while also providing enough capacity to support long context windows and several concurrent users. To make matters worse\, these demands are accelerating with state-of-the-art models now exceeding hundreds of billions of parameters\, context windows expanding from 4K to 128K tokens and beyond\, and mixture-of-experts designs introducing additional irregularity in memory access patterns. Thus\, today’s memory technologies force difficult trade-offs. SRAM can deliver extremely high bandwidth\, but at prohibitive area and capacity limits. HBM offers higher capacity\, but remains constrained by achievable bandwidth and I/O power. Closing this gap will require a fundamental rethinking of how memory is integrated with accelerator logic. \nIn this talk\, I will introduce our upcoming memory-centric accelerator\, which vertically integrates logic with 3D-stacked DRAM to deliver SRAM-level bandwidth and HBM-class capacity while substantially reducing energy consumption. I will describe the architectural challenges addressed by workload-aware channel mapping\, optimized power management\, topology-preserving redundancy\, and thermal-aware reliability mechanisms\, enabling the practical deployment of 3D-DRAM. Evaluations using models such as Llama-3.1\, DeepSeek-V3\, Canary\, and Whisper show that our accelerator achieves significantly higher throughput and responsiveness compared to HBM-based alternatives. I will conclude by examining the broader implications for computer architecture\, particularly how advanced logic-memory integration through hybrid bonding and multi-high stacking can reshape inference cost structures and enable the next generation of trillion-parameter models. \nBiography: Prashant J. Nair is the lead architect of the 3D-memory architecture at d-Matrix for their upcoming accelerators. He is also an Associate Professor at the University of British Columbia (UBC)\, where he leads the Systems and Architectures (STAR) Lab\, and an Affiliate Fellow of the Quantum Algorithms Institute. His research focuses on memory architectures and systems. Dr. Nair’s recognitions include the 2024 TCCA Young Architect Award (the highest early-career honor in computer architecture)\, the 2025 DSN Test of Time Award\, the HPCA 2023 Best Paper Award\, a MICRO 2024 Best Paper nomination\, and the HPCA 2025 Distinguished Artifact Award. Over the past decade\, he has published more than 40 papers in top-tier venues. SUMMARY:Prof. Luca Carloni of Columbia: Agile and Collaborative System-on-Chip Design with Open-Source Hardware Platforms
DESCRIPTION:Open-source hardware can play a unique role for the semiconductor industry in the age of sustainable AI. It can enable design reuse\, foster collaboration\, and support workforce development. ESP (Embedded Scalable Platforms) is an open-source research platform for system-on-chip (SoC) design that combines a modular architecture with an agile design methodology. The ESP architecture simplifies the design and prototyping of heterogeneous chips with multiple RISC-V processor cores and dozens of loosely coupled accelerators\, all interconnected by a scalable network-on-chip. The ESP methodology promotes system-level design while accommodating different specification languages and design flows. \nESP’s capabilities have enabled a small team\, primarily composed of graduate students\, to realize two SoCs of increasing complexity\, each within a few months. Conceived as a heterogeneous system integration platform and refined through years of teaching at Columbia University\, ESP is well suited to advance collaborative engineering across the open-source hardware community. \nThis talk will be followed by a standing lunch next to BC420 from 12:15 to 13:30. \nBio: \nLuca Carloni is professor and chair of Computer Science at Columbia University in the City of New York. He holds a Laurea Degree Summa cum Laude in Electronics Engineering from the University of Bologna\, Italy\, and an MS in Engineering and a PhD in Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences\, both from the University of California\, Berkeley. His research interests include heterogeneous computing\, system-on-chip platforms\, embedded systems\, and open-source hardware. He co-authored over two hundred refereed papers. \nLuca received the NSF CAREER Award\, the Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellowship\, and the ONR Young Investigator Award. In 2025\, he received the IEEE/ACM A. Richard Newton Technical Impact Award in Electronic Design Automation for the paper “Latency-Insensitive Protocols” and the Columbia Engineering School (SEAS) Alumni Distinguished Faculty Teaching Award. He is an ACM Fellow and an IEEE Fellow.

SUMMARY:Carrying the Torch: Honorary Lecture of Professor Giovanni De Micheli
DESCRIPTION:From my perspective as a researcher and educator\, the torch represents the message that I carry and will pass on to a new generation of scientists and engineers. The interaction and networking with the community is essential to our activity: indeed\, we teach to and learn from each other. The circle symbolizes the flow of information among peers as well as a paradigm where crossbreeding of ideas and methods is key to scientific advances. This message will be portrayed with examples from my scientific career and a vision of the future. \nBio:\nGiovanni De Micheli is currently the Scientific Director of the EcoCloud Center at EPFL. He was professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Stanford and EPFL for 40 years. Prof. De Micheli is a Fellow of ACM\, AAAS and IEEE\, elected member of 4 Academies\, including the US National Academy of Engineering and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
