SUMMARY:Designing Computer Systems under Sanctions and Sustainability
DESCRIPTION:August Ning\, Doctoral Assistant \nPrinceton University \nHost: Babak Falsafi\, PARSA \nRecently events such as global chip shortages\, semiconductor subsidies\, and the rise of large scale machine learning have emphasized the importance of semiconductors in our everyday lives. Recent regulations by the United States of America placed export controls on flagship GPU devices used for AI applications. Governments and companies alike have policies toward reducing carbon emissions\, specifically related to information and communications technology. \nComputing sanctions and sustainability metrics fundamentally change how computer systems are designed and optimized. First\, we will overview computing sanctions and how they affect chip architectures. Existing sanction specifications seem counterintuitive to how architects traditionally approach chip design. We show how existing policies make chip manufacturing more expensive and how LLM inference performance can still be improved compared to restricted baselines. Then I will detail how architecture-first policies can reduce the economic externalities caused by existing regulations. \nThen we will focus on how computer system designers can reason about sustainability. We analyze fine-grained data center computing and energy data towards building a framework for evaluating sustainability and cost trade offs. To conclude\, we will motivate the important role of computer scientists for crafting fair\, effective\, and impactful computing policy. \nBio: \nAugust Ning is a senior PhD candidate at Princeton University\, working with Prof. David Wentzlaff. His research interests span computer architecture under broadly defined economic constraints such as chip manufacturing\, policy\, and sustainability. He is supported by the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship and Princeton’s Gordon YS Wu Fellowship.

SUMMARY:X-HEEP Workshop: Enabling rapid and sustainable RISC-V based research using open source HW and SW
DESCRIPTION:As our world becomes more interconnected and reliant on digital systems\, the need for transparency\, accessibility\, and collaborative innovation in hardware and software design has become paramount. Closed and proprietary solutions often limit user sovereignty and control\, hinder interoperability\, and stifle innovation by locking users into a specific ecosystem. In contrast\, open-source initiatives are leading towards rapid prototyping of novel ideas and systems and unlocking from any specific vendor by empowering academic and industrial users to control\, modify\, and build upon existing technology. This workshop will bring both academic and industry members into a discussion about open-source hardware (HW) and software (SW) interests and showcase the potential of open-source technology with the eXtendable Heterogeneous Energy-Efficient Platform\, X-HEEP. \nX-HEEP is an EU and RISC-V-based enabler platform for rapid and sustainable VLSI/ASIC system design\, automation\, and testing. Following the success stories of open-source projects in the SW ecosystem\, with Linux kernel as the best example\, X-HEEP aims to foster innovative\, easy-to-integrate\, easy-to-use ASIC-oriented technology. Similarly\, other open-source HW initiatives\, such as OpenHW Group\, OpenRoad\, and SkyWater are already revolutionising the semiconductor industry by democratising chip design via open-source IPs\, EDA tools\, and PDKs. To this end\, X-HEEP enables HW research and freely delivers industrial-grade\, silicon-proven open-source CPU IPs from OpenHW. Together with our academic and industrial partners\, we will showcase the usage of X-HEEP for \n\nSW engineers to deploy end-to-end applications\,\nHW engineers to integrate and evaluate their own IPs\, and\nsystem-level designers to architect a full system using its configurability and extendibility capabilities.\n\nOpen-source HW and SW are becoming essential in the rapidly evolving technological landscape. This workshop fosters a shared knowledge and creativity culture\, enabling a broader range of applications\, from affordable healthcare devices to sustainable energy solutions. It stands as a critical pillar for a more inclusive\, innovative\, and sustainable technological future. \nCall for Posters\nTo improve the discussion possibilities among junior and senior researchers\, in this workshop\, a Poster Competition is scheduled. We invite submissions on\, but not limited to\, the following topics: \n\nOpen-source SW applications (end-to-end) being deployed into open-source Systems (SoC\, NoC\, SiP\, etc)\nOpen-source HW Accelerators integrated into open-source Systems (SoC\, NoC\, SiP\, etc).\nOpen-source systems (SoC\, NoC\, SiP\, etc) offering extra versatility and configurability in comparison to COTS solutions.\n\nA submission can describe a novel scientific result\, provide a position statement about a new and relevant problem\, or report a case study on practical experiences with a topic from the list above. The submissions should not be formally published in the past. The workshop will have no formal proceedings. Accepted posters can\, at the discretion and with an approval of their authors\, be published on the workshop’s website. \nCALL FOR POSTERS\nAuthor instructions: \nSubmissions in form of 1-page PDF file in Pentachart format (possible template in here) should be submitted through SoftConf: \nSUBMISSIONS\nKey dates\n\n\n\nSubmission deadline:\nFebruary 5\, 2024\n\n\nAcceptance notification:\nFebruary 14\, 2024\n\n\nWorkshop:\nMarch 25-27\, 2024 (precise half-day slot to be decided later)\n\n\n\nRegistration\nThis workshop is co-located with the Design\, Automation and Test in Europe Conference and will use its registration facilities. SUMMARY:Computing Near Storage
DESCRIPTION:Prof. Paolo Ienne is delighted to invite Arvind of MIT to give the following talk: \nWe live in an age where an enormous amount of data is being collected constantly because of smart phones\, the ubiquitous presence of sensors and the wide-spread use of social media. Useful and cost-effective analysis of this data is the biggest economic driver for the IT industry. Such analyses are often done in data centers or on a cluster of machines because they involve applying sophisticated algorithms to terabyte-size graphs\, which are extremely irregular and sparse. We will show how low-power appliances for such analyses can be built using flash storage and hardware accelerators. Such appliances are likely to be 10X cheaper than 16-32 node server clusters and will come in the form of an SSD to be plugged into your laptop. \nArvind is the Head of the Computer Science Faculty and the Charles and Jennifer Johnson Professor of Computer Science and Engineering at MIT. Arvind’s group\, in collaboration with Motorola\, built the Monsoon dataflow machines and its associated software in the late eighties. In 2000\, Arvind started Sandburst which was sold to Broadcom in 2006. In 2003\, Arvind co-founded Bluespec Inc.\, an EDA company to produce a set of tools for high-level synthesis. Arvind’s current research focus is to enable the rapid development of embedded systems and designing complex digital chips with associated correctness proofs. Arvind is a Fellow of IEEE and ACM\, and a member of the National Academy of Engineering and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

SUMMARY:Can we automate integrated circuit design?
DESCRIPTION:Jason Cong\, Director of the Center for Domain-Specific Computing (CDSC) of UCLA\, has been invited to EPFL by the IC Faculty. \nAs we are near the end of Moore’s Law scaling\, there is a great need to design various kinds of customized accelerators for much higher performance and energy efficiency. But integrated circuit (IC) designs remain a black art to many. Given the success of deep learning in many domains in recent years\, a natural question is if it is possible to fully automate IC designs. In this talk\, we present our latest research on this topic. By coupling high-level synthesis with a set of deep learning techniques\, such as graph-based neural networks and meta learning\, as well as microarchitecture guided optimization for regular structures\, such as systolic arrays and stencil computation\, we show that it is possible to automate IC designs so that most software programmers can design their own customized ICs for a wide range of applications. \nJason Cong is the Volgenau Chair for Engineering Excellence Professor at the UCLA Computer Science Department (and a former department chair)\, with joint appointment from the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department. He is the director of Center for Domain-Specific Computing (CDSC) and the director of VLSI Architecture\, Synthesis\, and Technology (VAST) Laboratory. Dr. Cong’s research interests include novel architectures and compilation for customizable computing\, synthesis of VLSI circuits and systems\, and quantum computing. \nHe has over 500 publications in these areas\, including 16 best paper awards\, and 4 papers in the FPGA and Reconfigurable Computing Hall of Fame. He and his former students co-founded AutoESL\, which developed the most widely used high-level synthesis tool for FPGAs (renamed to Vivado HLS after Xilinx’s acquisition). He was elected to an IEEE Fellow in 2000\, ACM Fellow in 2008\, the National Academy of Engineering in 2017\, and the National Academy of Inventors in 2020. He is the recipient of the 2022 IEEE Robert Noyce Medal for fundamental contributions to electronic design automation and FPGA design methods.
