spread of the pandemic and the ban on mobility in the coming weeks. The health and safety of our community is paramount during these difficult times. \nThe EcoCloud executive committee is currently considering hosting a virtual event at a later date in 2020 in a format that would be productive for our affiliates with time zones spanning from China\, Europe to the US West Coast. We are happy to report that EcoCloud recently hosted the ML4HPC workshop (as part of ASPLOS) on a virtual platform with 38 participants spanning these time zones. We have collected a survey from the participants about their experience which has so far been overwhelmingly positive\, and will incorporate the feedback into future virtual events. \nIn the meantime\, daily operations proceed with guidelines from the Swiss government and EPFL with regards to working from home. \nWe wish everyone safety and health in the coming weeks. \nThe EcoCloud Team \n  \nKeynote 1\nNew Compute Models to Power the Data Revolution\nRich Uhlig\, Intel Labs\nThis talk will cover research topics on new computing models ranging from research in quantum computing\, neuromorphic computing\, compute-near memory\, silicon photonics\, trusted-execution environments\, graph analytics\, etc. \nRich Uhlig is the managing director of Intel Labs and an Intel senior fellow. Prior to this role\, Rich was the director of Systems and Software Research in Intel Labs\, where he led research efforts in virtualization\, cloud-computing systems\, software-defined networking\, big-data analytics\, machine learning and artificial intelligence. He joined Intel in 1996 and led the definition of multiple generations of virtualization architecture for Intel processors and platforms\, known collectively as Intel Virtualization Technology (Intel® VT). Rich earned his Ph.D. in computer science and engineering from the University of Michigan. \nKeynote 2\nTBD\nRamanath Ramakrishnan\, Eaton\nRamanath Ramakrishnan is executive vice president and chief technology officer for Eaton. Ramanath originally joined Eaton in 2005 as a director of corporate technology and later was named senior vice president of technology for the Industrial Sector\, where he led significant technology and innovation programs for Eaton’s Aerospace\, Hydraulics and Vehicle businesses. Before joining Eaton\, he worked with GE for nine years\, and held engineering positions with Wyman-Gordon Company\, an aerospace components manufacturer. Ramanath is a certified professional engineer and holds a master’s degree in mechanical engineering from Ohio University. He is a certified Master Black Belt in Six Sigma and holds two patents. \nIndustrial Session\nThis year’s industrial session will feature prominent speakers from the IT industry including: \n\nSpeculative Execution Attacks as the New Memory Corruption: A Systems and Software Challenge for the Next Decade\nAnil Kurmus\, IBM Research Zurich\nSpectre and Meltdown are the first of numerous transient attacks\, which demonstrate that subtle CPU design and implementation issues can result in real world attacks\, leaking sensitive information from systems. In this talk\, we survey some Spectre-like attacks\, and discuss approaches to understand\, mitigate and prevent them. We draw a parallel with memory corruption and argue that a similar challenge to achieving memory safety awaits system and software researchers in designing efficient solutions to speculative execution attacks. \nAnil Kurmus is a security researcher at the IBM Research Zurich laboratory. His interests are mainly on systems security\, software security\, microarchitecture security\, storage systems\, and applied cryptography\, both in terms of offensive and defensive research. He holds a PhD degree (Dr.-Ing) from Technische Universitat Braunschweig (2014)\, and a Master’s degree (Diplome d’Ingenieur) from Telecom ParisTech (2009). His work\, often in collaboration with excellent students visiting IBM Research\, has been published in top systems security conferences. \n\nEdge Computing at Huawei\nJavier Picorel\, Huawei\nWith the popularity of cloud services and intelligent devices skyrocketing\, Information and Communications Technology (ICT) giants are challenged to cope with the massive data generation and user-request rates of a globally interconnected world. Huawei\, as one of the leaders in the IT industry\, has turned to edge computing\, in which processing happens closer to where data is generated\, rather than processing at the hyper-scale datacenters only. In this talk\, I will discuss the opportunities and challenges of edge computing and its implications to the traditional centralized cloud models\, and present real-world examples of employing edge computing at Huawei. \nJavier Picorel is a research scientist leading the Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) team in Huawei’s Munich Research Center\, which focuses on the hardware and software platform design and efficiency for Huawei Cloud’s portfolio\, along with shaping and roadmapping the business layout and technology focus of Huawei’s public cloud. He is broadly interested in TCO-efficient cloud infrastructures through the vertical integration of hardware and software layers in the end of semiconductor technology scaling. On Tuesday June 13th\, 2017\, EcoCloud researchers and industrial speakers highlighted the latest trends in sustainable cloud computing technologies. \nKeynote\nMemory-Driven Computing (Memory Wants To Be Free)\nPaolo Faraboschi\, Hewlett Packard Enterprise\nThe data deluge caused by proliferation of connected data sources is causing an unprecedented imbalance in the ability of our IT infrastructure to access and mine data. While it is relatively easier to provision compute resource\, it is much more challenging to provision the necessary data resources to feed them. This is true across the entire memory and storage hierarchy which is going through a profound transformation\, with the appearance of “storage-class memory” technology in the mix. This talk discusses why we need a new approach to architect the memory and storage systems\, what the motivating use cases are\, the obstacles\, and what we can do to address them. It then introduces the technology behind the recently announced Gen-Z consortium (www.genzconsortium.org)\, an open systems interconnect designed to provide memory semantic access to data and devices via direct-attached\, switched\, or fabric topologies. \nPaolo Faraboschi is a Fellow and VP at Hewlett Packard Enterprise. His interests are at the intersection of system architecture and software. He is currently working on The Machine project\, researching how we can build better memory-driven computing systems and how we can apply them towards Exascale. From 2010 to 2104\, he worked on low-energy servers and HP project Moonshot. From 2004 to 2009\, at HP Labs in Barcelona\, he led a research activity on scalable system-level simulation and modelling. From 1995 to 2003\, at HP Labs Cambridge\, he was the principal architect of the Lx/ST200 family of VLIW cores\, widely used in video SoCs and HP’s printers. Paolo is an IEEE Fellow and an active member of the computer architecture community. He is an author on 30 patents over 100 publications and the book “Embedded Computing: a VLIW approach”. Before joining HP in 1994\, he received a Ph.D. in EECS from the University of Genoa\, Italy. \nIndustrial Session\nThis year’s industrial session will feature prominent speakers from the IT industry\, including: \n\nScaling Neural Network Performance on Reconfigurable Logic\nMichaela Blott\, Xilinx Labs\nThe ongoing research on Neural Networks has started to focus on reducing the computation and storage requirements to make their deployment feasible in energy constraint compute environments. One of the promising opportunities is the reduction of the compute and storage down to a few bit precision whereby these networks achieve close to state of the art accuracy compared to their floating point counterparts. In this talk\, we will show an automated framework for implementing these reduced precision (and in the extreme case fully binarized) neural networks on reconfigurable logic that can scale reduced precision neural networks onto an FPGA-based inference accelerator\, given a set of fixed design constraints.Michaela Blott\, Xilinx \nWe show\, that the compute performance can scale well beyond typical floating point performance\, currently demonstrating 10s of thousands to millions of images per second for inference\, 14 TOPS compute performance with power consumption < 25W on today’s devices. Results on the accuracy\, architecture comparison to other approaches and detailed implementation of the latest large networks will also be presented. \nMichaela Blott graduated from the University of Kaiserslautern in Germany. She worked in both research institutions (ETH and Bell Labs) as well as development organizations and was deeply involved in large scale international collaborations such as NetFPGA-10G. Today\, she works as a principal engineer at the Xilinx labs in Dublin heading a team of international researchers. She is leading Xilinx’s strategy in regards to bringing FPGAs into new markets and investigating system architectures with emerging memory technologies for different application domains. Her expertise spreads data centers\, machine learning\, high-speed networking\, emerging memory technologies and distributed computing systems\, with an emphasis on building complete implementations. She is on the industry advisor council to the Irish Center for High-End Computing (ICHEC)\, serves on the technical program committee of a numerous conferences (DATE\, FPL\, GLOBALSIP\, Hipeac\, PPoPP)\, organizer of SC’2015/6/7 workshop and industry review panel of various research projects. \n\nNear-Memory Acceleration\nJan van Lunteren\, IBM\nRecent developments have caused data access and transfer to surpass actual data processing as the dominant cost factors in high-performance computing systems. As a result\, interest has been triggered in hybrid computer systems that offload part of the processing to programmable near-memory accelerators that tightly integrate computation within the memory system. IBM’s POWER8® processors introduced open (OpenPOWER™) high-bandwidth interconnects with the ability to attach such accelerators. Its upcoming POWER9 processor with its new openCAPI™ interface will further extend those capabilities. Our team at IBM Research – Zurich is investigating novel ways to extend this data-centric concept beyond the reduction of expensive data transfers in order to improve power efficiency further. In this presentation\, I will give an overview of our research activities\, addressing in particular how the memory system can play a more important role in (dynamic) workload optimization by enabling different ways to adapt its operation to the accelerated workload behavior\, and also how a novel accelerator architecture and programming model can be exploited to reduce the programmability overhead compared with that of traditional architectures. \nJan van Lunteren is Research staff member in the Cloud & Computing Infrastructure department at IBM Research – Zurich\, which he joined in 1994. After his PhD research on advanced adaptive memory systems\, he has been investigating and designing a broad range of accelerators\, including search engines\, packet classifiers\, XML accelerators\, protocol processing engines\, and regular expression scanners. His current interests include near-memory processing\, deep learning architectures\, and high-performance programmable accelerators. Jan has an M.Sc. and a Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from the Technical University of Eindhoven\, The Netherlands. He holds more than 60 issued and pending patents. \n\nAMPNet: Distributed Training for Flexible Neural Network Models\nRyota Tomioka\, Microsoft\nWhat if we started the history of deep learning with no graphics processing units (GPUs) but 100s of thousands of devices with limited fast on-chip memory connected to each other via network? What kind of models would we develop? What building blocks would we use to construct these models? How would we train a model on such a system? We explore these questions and propose that such a system may allow us to efficiently train a class of neural network models that exhibit complex and instance-dependent control flows that are known to be challenging for GPUs. \nRyota Tomioka is currently a researcher at Microsoft Research Cambridge\, UK. Prior to that he was a research assistant professor at Toyota Technological Institute at Chicago\, and an assistant professor at the university of Tokyo. His interest lies in the intersection of deep learning\, optimization\, and systems. \n\nDeclarative Query Processing in Imperative Managed Runtimes\nStratis Viglas\, Google\nStratis ViglasNew advances in memory technology\, like scalable distributed and persistent memory\, make it possible to have a truly universal storage model\, accessed directly through the programming language in the context of a fully managed runtime. This environment is further enhanced by language-integrated query\, which has picked up significant traction and has emerged as a generic\, safe method of combining programming languages with databases with considerable software engineering benefits.\nWe present the results of our work in integrating database and programming language runtimes through code generation and extensive just-in-time adaptation. Our techniques deliver significant performance improvements over non-integrated solutions. Our work makes important first steps towards a future where data processing applications will commonly access datasets as if they were fully in-memory\, and will be written in a single programming language employing higher-level APIs and language-integrated query to provide transparent and highly efficient data processing. \nStratis Viglas is an engineer at Google’s Data Infrastructure and Analysis group\, working on building software abstractions for petascale query processing. He is also a Professor in the School of Informatics at the University of Edinburgh\, UK where he holds the Chair of Data Management on New Hardware. He has made contributions to data stream processing\, XML data management\, query processing and optimization\, and data management over flash memory. His current work involves integrating scalable managed runtimes with database systems through just-in-time compilation of SQL queries and incorporating technologies like remote memory access and WD-HGST supports this transformation and leverages its vertical integration potential to address these new architecture requirements. \nWim De Wispelaere is VP Advanced Development at Western Digital. In this role\, Wim is responsible for long term technology research and innovation projects for the HGST Cloud Infrastructure Business Unit. Wim came to HGST through the acquisition of Amplidata. Wim founded Amplidata in 2008 with a couple of university friends. Amplidata invented and developed the scale-up and scale-out object storage software\, which is now at the core of the HGST Active Archive product. At Amplidata Wim has been CEO and managed the product strategy as CTO. \nPrior to Amplidata\, Wim was Director of Product Management and Technical Sales at Data Center Technolgies (DCT)\, a start-up company that has been acquired in 2005 by Veritas (later Symantec). The data deduplication technology that DCT developed\, was then integrated in Veritas Netbackup PureDisk and Backup Exec. He is an ACM and IEEE Fellow. \n\nFuture IoT Networks and Platforms\nMark Kelly\, Intel Labs\nThe Future Internet of Things will be made up of a myriad of connectivity solutions to address the broad range of applications domains. The continued proliferation of connected devices will bring a broad range of communication and network challenges\, among them scale and interoperability. One such group of technologies which is garnering much attention are Low Power Wide Area Networks (LPWANs). LPWANs provide low-rate connectivity to vast numbers of battery powered or energy harvested devices over very large distances that may span tens of kilometres. Existing pilot deployments have demonstrated the potential of LPWAN technologies to address a range of Internet of Things type uses cases\, covering licensed and licensed exempt spectrum. LPWANs are not without challenges such as the aforementioned scale and interoperability. Furthermore these networks are often deployed and challenging environments. . Our presentation seeks to outline our research into selected LPWAN technologies\, the current challenges and future opportunities. \nMark Kelly is the Principal Investigator for IoT in Intel Labs Europe. Mark is the technical lead for the IoT technology research with a particular emphasis on IoT Edge computing platforms and future IoT networks. Mark leads a team of technical researchers creating the next generation IoT technologies and Intellectual Property\, delivering new technologies to Intel Business Units. Mark is a senior member of the IEEE. \n\nRethinking the big data stack: hardware / software co-design for large-scale analytics\nEric Sedlar\, Oracle Labs\nRead-mostly data parallelism on large data sets (“big data”) is the most compelling reason to invest in more powerful computing technologies\, and the rationale behind Project RAPID\, our database machine project at Oracle Labs. The most efficient hardware for data parallelism at large scale looks very different from conventional processors in public cloud-style networks. I’ll talk a bit about the design principles we have found to be most useful to build big data systems from software through silicon\, and the best ways to evaluate such systems. \nEric Sedlar is Vice President & Technical Director of Oracle Labs (formerly Sun Labs). EcoCloud 2015 Annual Event. This year’s event kicked off with a keynote followed by a poster session and cocktail on the evening of Monday June 22nd\, 2015. On Tuesday June 23rd\, 2015\, EcoCloud researchers and industrial speakers highlighted the latest trends in energy-efficient data-centric technologies. \nKeynote\nBig Data @ Microsoft\nRaghu Ramakrishnan\, Microsoft \nUntil recently\, data was gathered for well-defined objectives such as auditing\, forensics\, reporting and line-of-business operations; now\, exploratory and predictive analysis is becoming ubiquitous\, and the default increasingly is to capture and store any and all data\, in anticipation of potential future strategic value. These differences in data heterogeneity\, scale and usage are leading to a new generation of data management and analytic systems\, where the emphasis is on supporting a wide range of very large datasets that are stored uniformly and analyzed seamlessly using whatever techniques are most appropriate\, including traditional tools like SQL and BI and newer tools\, e.g.\, for machine learning and stream analytics. These new systems are necessarily based on scale-out architectures for both storage and computation. \nHadoop has become a key building block in the new generation of scale-out systems. On the storage side\, HDFS has provided a cost-effective and scalable substrate for storing large heterogeneous datasets. However\, as key customer and systems touch points are instrumented to log data\, and Internet of Things applications become common\, data in the enterprise is growing at a staggering pace\, and the need to leverage different storage tiers (ranging from tape to main memory) is posing new challenges\, leading to caching technologies\, such as Spark. On the analytics side\, the emergence of resource managers such as YARN has opened the door for analytics tools to bypass the Map-Reduce layer and directly exploit shared system resources while computing close to data copies. This trend is especially significant for iterative computations such as graph analytics and machine learning\, for which Map-Reduce is widely recognized to be a poor fit. \nI will examine these trends\, and ground the talk by discussing the Microsoft Big Data stack. \nRaghu Ramakrishnan is a Technical Fellow in the Cloud and Enterprise (C&E) at Microsoft Corp. He focuses his work on big data and integration between C&E’s cloud offerings and the Online Services Division’s platform assets. He has more than 15 years of experience in the fields of database systems\, data mining\, search and cloud computing. \nRamakrishnan has been chief scientist for three divisions at Yahoo! Inc. over the past five years (Audience\, Cloud Platforms\, Search)\, as well as a Yahoo! Fellow leading applied science and research teams in Yahoo! Labs. He led the science teams for major Yahoo! initiatives\, including the CORE personalization project\, the PNUTS geo-replicated cloud service platform and the creation of Yahoo!’s Web of Objects through Web-scale information extraction. Before joining Yahoo! in 2006\, he was member of the computer science faculty at University of Wisconsin-Madison since 1987\, and was founder and chief technical officer of QUIQ\, a company that pioneered crowd-sourced question-answering communities. \nHis work in database systems has influenced query optimization in commercial database systems and the design of window functions in SQL:1999. He has written the widely used text “Database Management Systems” (with Johannes Gehrke). Ramakrishnan has received several awards\, including the ACM SIGKDD Innovations Award\, the ACM SIGMOD Contributions Award and the 10-Year Test-of-Time Award\, a Distinguished Alumnus Award from IIT Madras\, and a Packard Foundation Fellowship. He is a Fellow of the ACM and IEEE\, and serves on the steering committee of the ACM Symposium on Cloud Computing and the board of directors of ACM SIGKDD\, and is a past chair of ACM SIGMOD and member of the board of trustees of the Very Large Data Base Endowment. \nHe earned a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology Madras and a doctorate in computer science from the University of Texas at Austin. Ramakrishnan and his wife\, Apu\, brought up their two sons in Madison\, Wis.\, where he taught for many years. He can attest that while you might freeze there\, you would do so with a smile on your face. He likes to play tennis (both the lawn and table varieties) and read fiction\, and tries to stay fit\, with middling success. \nINDUSTRIAL SESSION\nThis year’s industrial session will feature prominent speakers from the IT industry\, including: \n\nCost-effective Cloud Storage Technologies\nEvangelos Eleftheriou\, IBM Research\nCost efficiency is one of the major driving forces of cloud adoption. Dense and cost-effective storage is critical to cloud providers especially for storing large volumes of data on the cloud. In this talk\, I will present storage technologies that enable cost efficiency for different types of cloud storage. Starting with the high-performance segment of storage\, I’ll present SALSA\, an I/O stack optimized for Flash\, that can elevate the performance and endurance of low-cost\, consumer Flash-based SSDs to meet datacenter requirements\, thereby enabling all-Flash cloud storage at low cost. Next\, I will talk about archival storage for the cloud\, focusing on IceTier\, a research prototype that enables the seamless integration of tape as an archival back-end to cloud object stores\, offering dramatically reduced cost for cold data. Finally\, I will present MCStore\, a cloud gateway technology that enables traditional storage systems to take advantage of the cloud\, thus bringing the merits of cost-effective cloud storage to the traditional datacenter. \nEvangelos Eleftheriou received a B.S degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Patras\, Greece\, in 1979\, and M.Eng. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from Carleton University\, Ottawa\, Canada\, in 1981 and 1985\, respectively. \nHe joined the IBM Research – Zurich laboratory in Rüschlikon\, Switzerland\, as a Research Staff Member in 1986. Since 1998\, he has held various management positions and currently heads the Cloud and Computing Infrastructure department of IBM Research – Zurich\, which focuses on enterprise solid-state storage\, storage for big data\, microserver/cloud server and accelerator technologies\, high-speed I/O links\, storage security\, and memory and cognitive technologies. \nHe holds over 100 patents (granted and pending applications). In 2002\, he became a Fellow of the IEEE. He was co-recipient of the prestigious 2005 Technology Award of the Eduard Rhein Foundation in Germany. Also in 2005\, he was appointed an IBM Fellow and inducted into the IBM Academy of Technology. In 2009\, he was co-recipient of the IEEE CSS Control Systems Technology Award. \n\nData Center Ambient Temperature Optimization: Key To Large-Scale Energy Savings\nKenny Gross\, Oracle\nASHRAE has for many years recommended that data center owners save energy by reducing air conditioning and warming up the data center. For the first 25 years of the computer industry\, this was very sound advice because there was no relationship between the operating temperature of enterprise computing servers and their energy efficiency. But for the most recent ~4-5 years\, this is no longer the case. Extensive Oracle research has demonstrated that with the latest generations of enterprise computing servers there are now very temperature-sensitive “energy wastage” mechanisms in IT server and storage systems that not only waste significant energy in warm data centers\, but also degrade compute performance. This presentation shows novel Oracle temperature-aware algorithms that enable intelligent optimization of data center ambient temperatures to minimize or avoid these heretofore non-observable energy wastage mechanisms in IT systems. Oracle’s suite of “Energy Aware Data Center” (EADC) algorithms predict an optimal ambient temperature set point\, decreasing energy wastage throughout the data center\, significantly increasing overall compute performance\, decreasing the carbon footprint\, while increasing return-on-assets for data center owners. \nKenny Gross is a Distinguished Engineer for Oracle and researcher with the System Dynamics Characterization and Control team in Oracle’s Physical Sciences Research Center in San Diego. Kenny specializes in advanced pattern recognition\, continuous system telemetry\, and dynamic system characterization for improving the reliability\, availability\, and energy efficiency of enterprise computing systems\, as well as the datacenters in which the systems are deployed. Kenny has 227 US patents issued and pending\, 186 scientific publications\, and was awarded a 1998 R&D 100 Award for one of the top 100 technological innovations of that year\, for an advanced statistical pattern recognition technique that was originally developed for nuclear and aerospace applications and is now being used for a variety of applications to improve the quality-of-service\, availability\, and optimal energy efficiency for enterprise computer servers. Kenny’s Ph.D. is in nuclear engineering from the U. of Cincinnati. \n\nImpala: A Modern\, Open-Source SQL Engine for Hadoop\nIppokratis Pandis\, Cloudera\nThe Cloudera Impala project is pioneering the next generation of Hadoop capabilities: the convergence of fast SQL queries with the capacity\, scalability\, and flexibility of a Hadoop cluster. With Impala\, the academic and Hadoop communities now have an open-sourced codebase that helps query data stored in HDFS and Apache HBase in real time\, using familiar SQL syntax. In contrast with other SQL-on-Hadoop initiatives\, Impala’s operations are fast enough to do interactively on native Hadoop data rather than in long-running batch jobs. \nThis talk starts out with an overview of Impala from the user’s perspective\, followed by a presentation of Impala’s architecture and implementation. It concludes with a summary of Impala’s benefits when compared with the available SQL-on-Hadoop alternatives. \nIppokratis Pandis is a software engineer at Cloudera working on the Impala project. Before joining Impala and Cloudera\, Ippokratis was member of the research staff at IBM Almaden Research Center. At IBM\, he was member of the core team that designed and implemented the BLU column-store engine\, which currently ships as part of IBM’s DB2 LUW v10.5 with BLU Acceleration. Ippokratis received his PhD from the Electrical and Computer Engineering department at Carnegie Mellon University. He is the recipient of Best Demonstration awards at ICDE 2006 and SIGMOD 2011 and Best Paper award at CIDR 2013. He has served as PC chair of DaMon 2014 and DaMoN 2015. \n\nNew Approaches to Compute Architecture for Energy Optimized Data Movement\nSteve Pawlowski\, Micron\nAs the number of on-die transistors continues to grow\, new computing models are needed to utilize this growing compute capacity despite a clock-frequency scaling wall\, and relatively sluggish improvements in I/O bandwidth. The spatial compute and programming model\, as introduced by the OpenSPL specification\, provides a method for taking advantage of compute capacity offered by current and trending hardware technology. With spatial computing\, compute processing units are laid out in space (either physically or conceptually) and connected by flows of data. The result of this approach is compute implementations which are naturally highly-parallel and thus very effectively use modern transistor-rich hardware. In this talk\, I will describe both the spatial computing model and a practical realization of the OpenSPL specification: Multiscale Dataflow Engines. Multiscale Dataflow Engines are a platform which directly implements the spatial computing model in hardware while at the same time supporting tight integration with conventional CPU-based compute resources. \nSteve Pawlowski is Vice President of Advanced Computing Solutions at Micron Technology. He is responsible for defining and developing innovative memory solutions for the enterprise and high performance computing markets. Prior to joining Micron in July 2014\, Mr. Pawlowski was a Senior Fellow and the Chief Technology Officer for Intel’s Data Center and Connected Systems Group. Mr. Pawlowski’s extensive industry experience includes 31 years at Intel\, where he held several high-level positions and led teams in the design and development of next-generation system architectures and computing platforms. Mr. Pawlowski earned bachelor’s degrees in electrical engineering and computer systems engineering technology from the Oregon Institute of Technology and a master’s degree in computer science and engineering from the Oregon Graduate Institute. He also holds 58 patents. \n\nEmbrace Innovation\, the Challenge of Big Corporations\nDaniele Tonella\, AXA Technology Services\nThis talk will highlight the challenges that big corporations face in embracing innovation: agility vs. legacy\, dealing with the pace of innovation\, digital transformation and its challenges for a company like AXA-Tech. \nDaniele Tonella joined the AXA Group in 2013 as CEO of AXA Technology Services. In this role he is responsible for the overall vision\, strategy and operation of AXA’s global IT infrastructure\, including cloud and developer platforms\, thus contributing to AXA’s digital transformation. Before joining AXA\, Daniele was Global CIO of Evalueserve\, a knowledge process outsourcing company headquartered in India. From 2002 to 2010 he held various IT leadership roles with increasing responsibility at Swiss Life\, notably CTO and CIO. He spent the initial part of his professional career as a consultant\, initially for Mercer Management Consulting and subsequently for McKinsey and Company. He is currently a member of the Foundation Board of the International Risk Governance Council (IRGC). Daniele Tonella was born in 1971 and is a Swiss citizen. This fact has enormous implications for the computing industry\, from mobile devices through large-scale datacenters. In this talk\, I will describe a computational fabric designed to achieve large performance and efficiency gains for datacenter services even in the face of the end of CMOS scaling. This fabric tightly couples many FPGAs together via a high-speed\, low-latency secondary network\, and permits elastic allocation of groups of reconfigurable chips to support varied services. I will also describe the implementation of an accelerated web search service on this fabric. \nDoug Burger is a Director in Microsoft Research’s Technologies division\, where he leads an interdisciplinary team focused on innovations in datacenter design and services\, as well as new computing experiences in the mobile and wearable spaces. Before joining Microsoft in 2008\, he was a Professor of Computer Science at the University of Texas at Austin\, where he co-led the TRIPS project which invented EDGE architectures and NUCA caches. He is a Fellow of both the ACM and the IEEE. \nINDUSTRIAL SESSION\nThis year’s industrial session will feature prominent speakers from the IT industry\, including: \n\nFARM: Fast Available Remote Memory\nMiguel Castro\, Microsoft Research\nWe describe the design and implementation of FARM\, a main memory distributed computing platform that exploits RDMA to improve both latency and throughput by an order of magnitude relative to state of the art main memory systems that use TCP/IP. FARM exposes the memory of machines in the cluster as a shared address space. Applications can use efficient ACID transactions to allocate\, read\, write\, and free objects with location transparency. We expect this simple programming model to be sufficient for most application code. In addition\, FARM provides two mechanisms to improve performance where required: lock-free reads over RDMA\, and support for collocating objects and function shipping to enable the use of efficient single machine transactions. We used FaRM to build a key-value store and a graph store similar to Facebook’s. They both perform well\, for example\, a 20-machine cluster can perform 160 million key-value lookups per second with a latency of 31µs. \nMiguel Castro has been working at Microsoft Research since late 2000 on distributed systems\, security\, and operating systems. Miguel received a PhD from MIT in 2001 for his work on Byzantine fault tolerance. He is the recipient of the 2011 SIGOPS Mark Weiser award. \n\nThe High Performance IO Infrastructure of Modern Scalable Data Centers\nMichael Kagan\, Mellanox\nThe scalability requirements of Modern Data Centers for Web 2.0 and Cloud present new challenges to the IO services offered by the network infrastructure. Remote Direct Memory Access (RDMA) technology is a communication paradigm that delivers on the promise of tight integration of very large clusters through its salient characteristics of low latency\, high bandwidth and low CPU utilization. RDMA fits naturally with network virtualization schemes and creates the ultimate IO environment for efficient network storage\, distributed databases and parallel processing. Highly scalable RDMA implementations\, purposely designed to address these needs\, are a key ingredient for the deployment of these solutions. \nMichael Kagan is a co-founder of Mellanox and has served as CTO since January 2009. Previously\, Mr. Kagan served as vice president of architecture from May 1999 to December 2008. From August 1983 to April 1999\, Mr. Kagan held a number of architecture and design positions at Intel Corporation. While at Intel Corporation\, between March 1993 and June 1996\, Mr. Kagan managed Pentium MMX design\, and from July 1996 to April 1999\, he managed the architecture team of the Basic PC product group. Mr. Kagan holds a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from the Technion — Israel Institute of Technology. \n\nThe IBM-DOME 64bit µServer Demonstrator\nRonald P. Luijten\, IBM\nFor the IBM-ASTRON DOME μServer project\, we are currently building two types of memory DIMM-like form factor compute node boards. The first is based on a 4 core 2.2 GHz SoC and the second on a 12 core / 24 thread 1.8 GHz SoC. Both employ the 64-bit Power instruction set. Our innovative hot-water based cooling infrastructure also supplies the electrical power to our compute node board. We show initial performance results and conclude with the key lessons. \nRonald P. Luijten\, senior IEEE member\, received his Masters of Electronic Engineering with honors from the University of Technology in Eindhoven\, Netherlands in 1984. In the same year he joined the systems department at IBM’s Zurich Research Laboratory in Switzerland. He has contributed to the design of various communication chips\, including PRIZMA high port count packet switch and ATM adapter chip sets\, culminating in a 15-month assignment at IBM’s networking development laboratory in La Gaude\, France as lead-architect\, from 1994-95. He currently manages the IBM DOME uServer and Algorithms and Machines teams. Formerly he managed the OSMOSIS optical switch demonstrator project in close collaboration with Corning\, inc. His team contributed the congestion control mechanism to the converged enhanced Ethernet standard and is worked on the network validation of IBM’s PureSystems product line. His team also contributed a 2.5D pattern selection method to enhance performance of source/mask optimization for 22nm and 14nm CMOS. Ronald’s personal research interests are in datacenter architecture\, design and performance (eData Motion in Data Centers). He holds more than 25 issued patents\, and has co-organized 7 IEEE conferences. Over the years\, IBM has awarded Ronald with three outstanding technical achievement awards and a corporate patent award. \n\nComputing in Space\nOskar Mencer\, Maxeler\nAs the number of on-die transistors continues to grow\, new computing models are needed to utilize this growing compute capacity despite a clock-frequency scaling wall\, and relatively sluggish improvements in I/O bandwidth. The spatial compute and programming model\, as introduced by the OpenSPL specification\, provides a method for taking advantage of compute capacity offered by current and trending hardware technology. With spatial computing\, compute processing units are laid out in space (either physically or conceptually) and connected by flows of data. The result of this approach is compute implementations which are naturally highly-parallel and thus very effectively use modern transistor-rich hardware. In this talk\, I will describe both the spatial computing model and a practical realization of the OpenSPL specification: Multiscale Dataflow Engines. Multiscale Dataflow Engines are a platform which directly implements the spatial computing model in hardware while at the same time supporting tight integration with conventional CPU-based compute resources. \nwww.openspl.org\nM. He joined Bell Labs after receiving a PhD from Stanford University. Besides driving Maximum Performance Computing (MPC) at Maxeler\, Oskar was Consulting Professor in Geophysics at Stanford University and he is also affiliated with the Computing Department at Imperial College London\, having received two Best Paper Awards\, an Imperial College Research Excellence Award in 2007 and a Special Award from Com.sult in 2012 for “revolutionising the world of computers”. \n\nProgrammable Fabrics for Virtual and Physical Workloads\nMaurizio Portolani\, Cisco Systems\nThe network connectivity in the datacenter as it is today suffers from several shortcomings ranging from the inability to perform rapid changes\, the plethora of encapsulation mechanisms being used by servers\, a lot of management points and a model to describe workload connectivity that is rooted in broadcast domains\, VLAN tagging and IP addresses. The talk describes how we can change this model by decoupling the definition of workload relationships from these old constructs\, how we can simplify the task of providing virtual and physical workload connectivity and how in the end the result is a much more portable element of configuration that can templet-ize the instantiation of “applications” on the fabric. \nMaurizio Portolani is a Distinguished Engineer at Cisco Systems involved in architecting and validating large scale data center designs. He is the author of several Cisco Data Center solution architectures and of the book “Datacenter Fundamentals”.
